Botanical Bloom Jhumki: Designing a Timeless Floral Gold Earring in Procreate
Every jewellery design begins with an idea, but transforming that idea into a realistic concept requires creativity, patience, and the right digital tools.
This Botanical Bloom Jhumki was illustrated entirely in Procreate, bringing together traditional Indian jewellery aesthetics with modern digital illustration techniques. Inspired by blooming flowers and flowing botanical vines, the design celebrates timeless craftsmanship while showcasing the possibilities of digital jewellery design.
In this article, I'll take you behind the scenes of the creative process and explain how this traditional gold jhumki evolved from a simple sketch into a polished presentation rendering.

The Inspiration Behind the Design
Nature has always influenced jewellery design. Flowers symbolize beauty, prosperity, and celebration, making them one of the most enduring themes in Indian jewellery.
For this concept, I wanted to create a jhumki that feels:
- Traditional
- Luxurious
- Elegant
- Rich in handcrafted details
- Suitable for bridal and festive collections
The result is a floral composition where every leaf, petal, and engraved vine contributes to the overall harmony of the piece.
Creating the Design in Procreate
Unlike CAD modelling, Procreate allows jewellery designers to quickly explore ideas, proportions, textures, and artistic details before moving into production.
This Botanical Bloom Jhumki was developed through multiple stages:
1. Initial Sketch
The design started with simple outlines to establish:
- Overall proportions
- Dome shape
- Floral placement
- Balance between the upper stud and lower jhumki
At this stage, the focus was on composition rather than detailing.
2. Floral Composition
The circular stud became the centerpiece of the design.
Layered petals were arranged symmetrically, while engraved leaves surrounded the flower to create natural movement throughout the design.
3. Surface Engraving
Once the structure was complete, decorative elements were added:
- Flowing vines
- Hand-engraved leaves
- Botanical textures
- Floral motifs
- Traditional borders
These details create depth without relying on gemstones.
4. Gold Rendering
One of the most enjoyable stages was rendering the yellow gold.
Using multiple Procreate brushes, I gradually built:
- Highlights
- Shadows
- Reflections
- Edge lighting
- Metal texture
These layers transformed a flat sketch into a realistic jewellery presentation.
5. Final Polish
The finishing stage included:
- Contrast adjustments
- Fine engraving refinement
- Gold glow
- Edge cleanup
- Decorative bead detailing
This brought the illustration closer to a handcrafted luxury jewellery concept.
